Northop CC - winners of the Challenge Trophy 2016!!

Northop won through to the Final courtesy of a convincing win at The Pont. Northop’s 139-7 (Harry Lewis 27, Lloyd Hayes 53) being too much for Pont., 112 (Jamie Griffiths 41. Darren Williams 6/25 off 5 overs.)

The First leg of the Final (on the Tuesday evening) was held at Northop with the visitors, St. Asaph, batting first. They made rather faltering progress with only D.North (20)and D. Ryan (25) appearing to settle-in due to eager fielding and tidy bowling. They ended their 20 overs on 90-9, with Ben Beaver taking 5/33 off 5 overs, and Mark Poynton 3/17 off 5.

Northop made slightly better of conditions and with the aid of a last ball 6 (by Matty Williams, 13*) they totalled 107-3 off their 20 overs. Richie Walker making 21, and again the stand out knock came from Lloyd Hayes with 37*.

Northop took a slender, but nonetheless advantageous lead of 17 into the second leg on the Thursday evening, at St. Asaph.

Visitors batted first, and Northop ran up 122-8 off their 20 overs. (A good effort considering that in-form Lloyd Hayes was unavailable.) Darren Williams completed a round 50, and the consistent Richie Walker 32, adding 82 runs together for the second wicket in ten overs in a vital partnership.   Matty Williams 19. D. Ryan 3/23 off 5 overs.

So, the winning target for St. Asaph was 122, PLUS the 17 run deficit from the first leg, meaning that they had to beat 139.

W & D Ryan added 50 for their first wicket but used up half of their overs. J. Foulkes contributed 20 and P. Flemming looked as though he might be the St. Asaph hero as he progressed to 32 before being run out by Danny Nicholson.

An almighty scramble for runs in the final overs had the crowd in thrall. St. Asaph needing a dozen runs from the final 6 balls of the contest to win.

They managed a couple of boundaries and with a scramble off the last ball it was the closest possible finish. A double-check of the score book was required before the scores were deemed to be exactly level with St. Asaph managing parity on 139-7. A TIED GAME!!

There followed several minutes of high tension, with neither group of players knowing who would indeed lift the trophy.

After consulting the Rule book very carefully the officials were in full agreement that the winners of the trophy would be the team that had lost least wickets, over the TWO legs of the Final.

St. Asaph had lost 9+7=16, and Northop had lost 3+8=11.

NORTHOP CC WAS DULY DECLARED WINNERS OF THE FLINTSHIRE CHALLENGE TROPHY 2016.
